Origins of VIctorian Balloon Back Chair ??

I volunteer in a Victorian style home and I was told our the Victorian Balloon Backed Chairs with no back padding were to help align your back and promote correct posture. Has anyone heard of this? Im not coming across any websites saying why some Balloon back chairs now back padding and why some do not ???

Although the lack of an upholstered back provided little comfort, design would have been the larger issue. Balloon Backs are seen as early as 1830's in Europe and 10 to 15 years later in America. Finer examples are usually the older ones and were accomplished in elegant woods. The original design preceded Victorian closely following the style of Louis Philippe and carried through the 20th century.
