Rhodium And It's Many Uses
Jewelry has always been popular with women. Whether they like gold or silver, there has always been a great selection available, in all different price ranges. Jewelry, whether it is new or antique, always holds a special place for women and is always a staple in gift giving. It is also something used to pass along to other generations as a remembrance.
For many years, silver has been a staple in jewelry, as popular as gold but without the high price. Many people don't realize that silver colored jewelry is not always silver though. There are many other metals used to make jewelry that looks like silver. The silvery jewelry could be made from metals such as platinum, rhodium and even white gold.
Rhodium is often used to plate silver, making the metal stronger and less prone to tarnish. Rhodium earrings are many times silver ones that are plated in the rhodium. Because silver easily tarnishes if it is not cared for and polished properly, the rhodium plate prevents this from happening.
Accessory companies have used rhodium in some of their high end pieces like hobo handbags. Because the metal has a high resistance to corrosion, it is perfect for metal pieces on handbags and other accessories. Typically the metal pieces will be coated in rhodium plate to keep their brilliance and strength.
It has many other unusual uses as well. Electrical contacts are made from rhodium because they have a low electrical resistance. Rhodium plate is used as well in optical equipment and in mammography systems as a filter. High quality writing pens also contain the metal. The most popular use however is for cars catalytic converters in the exhaust system.
Rhodium is unusual because not only is it mined and extracted from other ores found like gold, platinum and silver, it is also possible to extract rhodium from used nuclear fuel. This metal is found in the periodic table under transition metals and is symbolized by Rh.
While many people prefer the look of silver, it isn't as widely used as you may believe. Silver toned jewelry however, is very popular, mainly because it looks great with just about everything. Gold can look plain and boring, but striking silver toned pieces seem to add a brilliance to any outfit, whether it is girls shirts and jeans or a cute little black dress and heels.
Coral Gables man leaves historic house to Uncle Sam (Miami Herald)
The United States government had more than two million reasons to celebrate
Saturday.
A longtime Coral Gables resident designated $1 million and his historic home
to the federal government in his will to help wipe away the nation's $15
trillion public debt.
Uncle Sam put the home on 1248 Coral Way on the auction block Saturday. The
winning bid: $1.175 million.
The 1929, Spanish-style home belonged to James H. Davidson Jr., who lived in
the home since his teenage days in 1938 and died childless last December at
87.
The home was officially designated a historic landmark in November by the
Historic Preservation Board of Coral Gables.
The Miami-Dade property appraiser's office values the two-story home that sits
on four lots of land (double the size of most houses in the area) at just over
$700,000.
The average list price for similar homes for sale in that area is $1.2
million, according to the real estate website Trulia.
"It's incredible, the house really has remained untouched," said Kelley
Schild, a Coral Gables resident who came out Saturday to check out the house
and see the auction.
The auction attracted about 100 people Saturday. Fifteen people registered to
