my partner and i have, or should i say HAD lovely very dark brown high gloss furniture. ie - dining table, hall stand and coffee tables. they are not very old but because they are so high gloss they scratch so easily and they are getting worse. they are solid wood but have a thick laminate over the top and like i said are high gloss. does anyone have any ideas on changing there colour etc?? im not sure if you could sand or paint them?? with the laminate and gloss??
If I were you I would just buy some polishing compound, which you can get at a Napa automotive store, and try compounding the scratches out. Most, if not all, of the fine ones will disappear; the deeper ones won't seem so bad if the rest of the table looks better. I don't know what type of finish this is, but if it is lacquer, you can also lightly wet sand using 1200-grit paper and some window cleaner and THEN compound (for deeper scratches). Compound is actually a very, very fine "sandpaper" which, when rubbed, will actually polish a finish and make it shiny again. If you're not sure about all of this, try calling Furniture Medic or someone in your area who might want to try this in your home.
