Functional Art In Home Decor
When you move into your new home, the first thing you need to do is fill it with the things you need in order to be able to function in the home. After that, you add the decorative touches. Thanks to online stores, the whole world of decorative accessories is available to anyone. Wherever you live, you can buy the best of everything online. You have to be careful, though. Save money by combining functionality and style in your home accessories.
Your living room needs a sofa and some chairs. It also needs a coffee table, at least a couple of side tables and good lighting. Once those absolute necessities are taken care of, then you look for the living room decor. You buy paintings or hang photographs, buy a vase or two and some nice nick-knacks to make the room look nice.
In your kitchen, the first thing you do is have kitchen cupboards installed. Then you look for the fridge and the stove. Then you move on to the smaller appliances like the microwave and toaster. Only when you have these items do you start thinking about the other kitchen implements and decorations.
Your knife set is a good example of this. You think of it as purely functional. Knives are used for preparing food, not for showing off, you think, so you hide them away in a drawer.
A Wusthof knife set is not only functional, but beautiful. Isn't it a shame that you have it hidden away in a drawer while your toaster sits on top of the counter, even though you only use it once a day? You need your knives every time you come into the kitchen, so shouldn't they be easily accessible?
All you need to do is buy an inexpensive knife block set. With this for storing your knives, you will be accomplishing two things at once. Your knives will be within easy reach and they will be look stunning in their wooden block set.
You will be amazed by how a little change like this will transform your kitchen. You will get the most out of your knives because they will always be within easy reach. You have only one toaster and it is easy enough to take out of cupboard when you need it. Just by having a wooden knife block, you have made your kitchen more beautiful and more functional at the same time.
This is one example of how to combine decor with usefulness in the home. Those little nick-knacks that cost so much are forgotten when their novelty wears off, but functional art is always remembered and appreciated.
Anonymous Commenters: Cowards Or Contributors? (Techdirt)
We've had a few discussions here at Techdirt about anonymous commenters,
coming down firmly on the side of the anonymous. Tim Geigner's response to
Anil Dash's "If Your Website's Full of Assholes, It's Your Fault" turned the
tables on the tired trope that anonymity breeds assholishness by stating that
if your comment thread is awesome, it's your commenters' "fault." Many other
pieces have been written by Mike Masnick, taking on various articles and
editorials that claim that anonymity is ruining civil discourse, destroying
the internet and (presumably) humanity as we know it in the process. Even in
my post comparing trolls to town drunks, I took care to point out that not
every anonymous commenter is a loudmouthed troll.
Via Above the Law's daily Non Sequiturs roundup comes a post at What About
Paris? (a client-focused legal blog) reiterating site owner JD Hull's
arguments against allowing anonymous commenters, namely that most commenters
haven't earned the protection that anonymity affords them, using a photo of
some French Resistance members to illustrate his point:
