The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Rubik's Touch Cube Compared To The Classic Rubik's Cube
Rubik's Cube a phenomenal toy that considered as one of the best selling toy in the world, was founded by a Hungarian Architecture Profeesor and Sculptor Erno Rubik in 1974, and was made public in 1980..
In 2006, a Hong Kong based company Techno Source started a three years development of an electronic version of that puzzle called Rubik’s Touch Cube. This cube, with sensor-based technology, is the world’s first completely electronic, interactive puzzle cube. The Rubik’s Touch Cube was first made public at the American International Toy Fair in 2009, and ready on the shelves in the fall of 2009, with a high price tag of $149.99 price tag.
What are the pros and cons Touch Cube - the sophisticated electronic version - compared to the older classic Rubik’s Cube?
Pros:
- This is a gadget that cleverly use the technology to improved an old toy to become a nice electronic game.
- It has a number of interesting features, for instance: auto solve feature, scramble button (yeah.. you don't have to manually scramble the puzzle like what you should in the classic toy), hint feature that help you when you are stuck with the game, and some other cool feature.
- People loves some "touch" user interface mechanism.
- The colors are very vibrant and brighter than what seen in product pictures. This toy really glow in the darks make this cube toy usable even after the lights turned off.
- The auto-solve feature uses a common set of steps to solve the green face first, then the sides and finally the blue face. Note this may not be the fewest moves to solve the cube, but it is a reliable, reproducible and easy way to learn how to solve any 3x3 cube. The solver can be stopped at any point if you wish to continue yourself.
- Easy to charge with automatically turned on fun to watch "screensaver" mode
- Falls to sleep after a period of non-use and saves your progress to conserve batteries.
Cons:
- High Price Expensive - this product is A LOT of money (Update: some online website offer the best deal of this Touch Cube, up to 57% off)
- Takes more time to solve than the classic version. Possibly because its a little bit difficult to use than the classic one.
- Bigger and heavier than the original. Somehow the Touch Cube is kind off heavy for little kids.
- The hints are somehow using uncommon approach to solve the puzzle. This means the steps suggested appears with no apparent progress until suddenly it is solved at the very last moment.
- The top face are difficult to rotate around it's center axis from time to time.
- Can only rotate the top face - most top rotations would affect the bottom faces, while occasionally you have to reorient the cube to turn a face near the bottom.
Overall the electronic Rubik's TouchCube is a very nice toy. It offers simplicity and some nice to use features. The only downside is the high price labeled on this toy. However, you can catch huge price cut for this toy, make it a perfect Christmas gift for your family.
