I want to paint some old mahogany furniture that belonged to my mother in the shabby chic style. Im quite hesitant as i dont want to completly ruin the furniture as i cant afford to replace it!
I was wondering if anyone could give me any hints or tips on achieving this type of finish or point me in the direction of some useful websites. Also if you could tell me what materials (brush types etc) you used and most importantly what shade of paint you picked!

try the site, www.talkfaux.com. I think you'll be able to find a lot of info there for different finishes. There seems to be a lot of people there who could be helpful to you. There are a number of professional faux finishers that frequent that forum and will probably help. If possible, try practicing on a scrap piece first (I know it's hard with the situation you are in using your mother's furniture, but you may be able to find some similar wood at a yard sale or goodwill or somewhere you can play with a bit). You'll feel more confident to start your mother's pieces.
Also, try your local library...I find lots of books on that type of thing that are really inspiring and helpful when starting projects. (It's kind of nice to have them in front of you as you work, you know?)
