Choosing And Locating A Feng Shui Fountain
Most people have seen a feng shui fountain, and many people are basically familiar with the term feng shui, but do not understand the concepts behind it or the benefits it can provide. Feng shui is a system that originated in ancient China, and its purpose is to create a living space that has a proper flow of positive qi, or energy. Qi is the defining idea behind many other Chinese medicinal practices and other systems, such as acupuncture and many martial arts forms.
Feng shui, in particular, is about arranging a space with the proper flow of energy, and a key part of that is a balance between the elements: water, wood, fire, earth and metal. Since most of us don't have bodies of water in our homes, a feng shui fountain can play an important role in balancing a space.
While a feng shui fountain can be an integral part of space's flow, you don't need to follow all of the concepts of feng shui to enjoy having a fountain. Many people like these fountains simply because they find the sound of water soothing and relaxing.
No matter your sense of style, there is a feng shui water fixture to fit it. Many people favor a classic Chinese design, while others like to have a more modern edge with western influences. Some people opt for truly wild abstract fountains. Fountains are available in a variety of sizes, as well. They range from huge outdoor fixtures to wall-hanging fountains to tiny fountains that will fit on a shelf or small table.
There are a lot of rules to follow if you want to reap the positive energy benefits of feng shui. Here are a few basics to get you started. There are two big things to watch out for. First of all, you don't want a fountain in a bedroom. The water element can bring added anxiety to one's life when located in a sleeping area. The other caveat is to avoid placing a water feature in the south, as fire (which clashes with water) is the dominant element of the southern orientation.
The optimal places for a feng shui fountain are east, southeast, or northern sections of your home. Each area is associated with a different positive energy flowing into your life. An eastern fountain promotes health, while one placed in the southeast supports your wealth and prosperity. A north-located fountain will bring positive energy that will support your career and livelihood.
A feng shui water fixture is a good introduction into the art of feng shui. It is just one small piece of the larger puzzle, though. This ancient Chinese art is incredibly deep and complex.
How old do you think this table is? (Pic included)?

And is this a nightstand, table, etc?
sarah: I bought it from a thrift store, that's the tag they put on it to show that it was sold. The thing that makes me think it's old is the skeleton key locks.
It looks kind of like a Victorian commode (you don't have anything for size reference and since you refered to it as a night stand, I'm guessing it's pretty low but wide.) if it's the real deal then you're looking at something that was made between 1890-1920. You'll need to check for furniture maker's marks, what type of wood it is made of, and see how it is put together--what type of joints it has holding it together.
Most likely it is a reproduction made in the mid to late 1970s. That style of furniture was making a come back there were tons of knockoffs then.
and yes, it is a dresser and not a table. You can use it as a table or sideboard or nightstand if you like. a lot of furniture that was used in the past is no longer practical and often gets used for something else. I have a Victorian commode (low dresser w/ mirror that was used as a dressing table) that I use for storage and setting my mail on in the entrance way of the house.
edit:
real antiques do wind up in the thrift store because someone doesn't know what they have and it is possible that you have stumbled on one but you do need to be aware that it's just as likely a modern reproduction.
check for the type of wood (mahogany, rosewood, or walnut is the real thing).
If you can find the original finish under the paint--if it's the real thing the original finish will be dark.
look at how the drawers are put together. Do they use dovetails to join the sides of the drawer? it's the real thing.
the reproductions were made from a cheap pine and had medium and light finishes.
Apple design and the little things (TUAW)
Apple is known for its attention to detail. The layout of its stores, the
design of its icons and the colors used in its promotional materials are all
carefully planned. This attention to the littlest of things even appears in
the iPhone 4. As pointed out by David Goldman of Edible Apple, the placement
of the iPhone speakers is almost perfect.
Unlike its competitors which place the speakers on the back of the phone,
Apple places the speakers on the bottom face. This bottom location gives you a
loud, clear sound when the phone is laying on the table. Competitor's handsets
with a rear-facing speaker will be muffled when they are placed in the same
position. This might not seem like a big deal until you miss a meeting because
your handset is laying on your nightstand and the muffled alarm is too quiet
to wake you up.
You can also see this attention to detail in Apple's design of copy and paste.
Other mobile platforms include copy and paste, but their implementation is
awkward. Selecting the correct text is hit or miss because your fat fingers
block the text that you are highlighting. Apple's ...
