Aspects Of The Modern Kitchen
It's amazing to look at pictures of kitchens of old compared to today's kitchen. Those old kitchens were small, enclosed spaces that were not really even efficient as rooms in which to prepare food. The modern kitchen, on the other hand, is a marvel of technology and design.
The first big improvement was when they started knocking down the walls around the kitchen. As if by magic, the kitchen was opened up to the world.
The lack of walls did create a storage problem, however. Kitchen designers came up with clever solutions to storage problems. They started with the remaining walls, leaving the sink under the window and making the adjacent wall the cooking area.
On the other side of the room, the wall was replaced by a peninsular bench. On the kitchen side, this bench was at working height, but it had a raised bar on the other side. This served two purposes. First, it was a great place for people to sit on bar stools and enjoy breakfast or a snack. Secondly, small appliances like the Sanyo rice cooker could be stashed neatly away, but available for immediate use.
Then they went to work on the cupboards, drawers and cabinets. One very handy change was the inclusion of more drawers in the kitchen. Instead of just a few, many kitchens now had banks of extra deep drawers for storing pots, pans and small appliance like the kitchen hand mixer.
The corner cupboard has always been a problem in the kitchen. Things always get lost in the back of the cupboard. It's so deep, even a homelite chainsaw could disappear back there. Kitchen designers and hardware designers put their heads together and came up with the lazy susan. With a lazy susan, all you need to do is spin her around and whatever you want is at your fingertips. There's no need to get down on your hands and knees and rummage around anymore.
Improvements in the materials that kitchens are built with have resulted in the easy maintenance melamine kitchen. The interiors can easily be washed clean. Melamine door and drawer fronts come in a variety of colors and textures and are almost maintenance free.
There is nothing that has not undergone drastic improvements in the modern kitchen. The large appliances, such as refrigerators and stoves are a vast improvement over the old days. Even the kitchen sink has undergone changes for the better. All in all, there may be no other area of the home that has changed for the better more than the kitchen. That's probably why it's now the most used room in the home.
