Glass Vases - Why Do We Use Them
When we get given or purchase our own cut flowers, what do we do with them first? Invariably we look for classy glass vases in wich to display them in. People have used glass vases to display their flowers ever since it was invented, but what is the logic behind the glass dominance. Well logic does have a lot yo do with it, so lets take a look:
Easy to clean. Due to the fact glass is so dense and smooth, there is nowhere for dirt to ingrain and it is simple to clean. Also, any dirt shows up easily, unlike other materials and colors that may hide the dirt. All sorts of fungus and microbes breed in vases so it is very important that they are cleaned thoroughly each time before they are used. Lead crystal vases can be a little more expensive but they are actually known to have antibacterial qualities
Photosynthesis. Plants harvest their energy from the sun's light during a phenomenon called photosynthesis. What this means is that if a plant does not get enough light it will struggle to produce energy and may not survive. This is why people are encouraged to leave plants and flowers somewhere where they have access to natural light. The maximum amount of light is let in by glass vases and therefore the flower is given the best chance to perform photosynthesis and survive for the max amount of time.
Viewing pleasure. This last one is very basic. We want to be able to see the most amount of any flower that we can...we want to get our moneys worth and glass is ideal for this. Frequently you will find that some of the most attractive parts of a flower are found below the head, and these would not be visible if the vase was not see through. This is the same reason that we drink from wine glasses, so that we can actually enjoy the view of what is being contained.
Why do they put small glasses of water in glass display cases?
They aren't used as often now, but I still see some malls have small (almost as small as a shot glass) glasses of water inside display cases. The cases usually display crystal merchandise, although I'm sure they show others too. These cases also have those small, bright lights that I'm sure heats up a lot.
Is the water for preventing the glass fogging from the heat, or to assist in the lighting effect, or what?
Most likely to maintain a reasonable humidity. Bright lights would tend to dry out whatever they illuminate.
It's the big see (Raleigh News)
We love the vibrancy of the season so much, we just want to bottle it. In a
way, that's what holiday windows do. They capture the bright and shiny moments
and display them behind glass for all to behold.
