Easy Cottage-Style Decorating For Your Home
If you’d love to have a light, airy look in your home, cottage-style décor is a perfect choice. This type of décor lets you create a beautiful, comfortable home on a budget. It doesn’t matter what style of home you live in—you can easily transform your current look into a vintage look for very little money. Do you just adore rooms that look as though they float on the breeze? Then you should definitely try out this look, as you’ll be sure to love it.
Use Light Colors
Light colors are the key to creating this look. Many people mistakenly believe that white is the only color used in this décor. But using soft pastel shades of blue, aqua, yellow, pink, and green combined with a healthy dose of white will make the room just as light and airy, while the color provides interest and depth.
Make Great Use of Paint!
One of the most affordable things you can do to make a dramatic change in your home’s appearance is painting. With this décor style, painting your walls a pastel color works really well. If you want to create a truly original look, only paint opposite walls, leaving the other walls white. Then you can trim baseboards in a contrasting shade.
For creating furniture that looks worn, paint is great as well. All you need to do to create that vintage look is to take a coffee or end table, paint it a pastel color or white, and sand the edges lightly, giving it an antique feel. Look for great bargains on small tables at flea markets and garage sales.
Surprising Floors
When most people consider flooring, they think of wood, tile, or carpet. In a cottage décor, wood floors are preferable. While light-colored wood planks are best, any type of wood will do. Leave them as is or paint them a shade of your choosing.
You can stencil your own area rug or the perimeter of the floor for a truly unique and absolutely inspiring look. If you already have a carpet that’s light-colored, then that will work as well. All you need do is anchor your furnishings with vintage-looking rugs.
Create Interest with Furnishings
Furniture can either be old or new. For new furniture, try to keep the wood light in color. Furniture upholstered in small pastel floral prints is particularly warm and inviting. When you toss throw pillows on your sofa, mix and match the patterns. With this style, anything you like will work!
Put your imagination to work when deciding on wood coffee tables, wall book cases and end tables. See if you can get a hold of an old door or if there’s one in the garage. Then get creative, whether you decide to cut it down, paint, sand, or stencil it. Then simply add legs, and you’ll have a completely unique coffee table.
Think Simple When You Accessorize
With this design style, accessories can be anything you like. However, you want to avoid overdoing it, as you don’t want to end up with rooms that look messy or cluttered. Just select a few simple pieces and display them around the room. For example, a simple white vase filled with wildflowers is perfect. Then stack two or three old books on an end table, placing the vase on top. Or try a small lamp with a beaded lampshades to complement this look.
Cottage décor really has no rhyme or reason to it. It will all fall together, as long as you love all the furniture and accessories you choose. Remember to have fun and enjoy creating this beautiful, inexpensive, new look.
need to plug two end table lamps to outlet.is there a wireless outlet trying to avoid ext cord ?
Just had new hardwood floors installed, floor outlet not an option, there is concrete under the wood. Is there such an outlet that could be placed under the couch and transmits to the wall outlet remotely? Like wireless internet?
Sorry no but there are many ways that have been developed in recent years to hide a cord some can be found at the "easy button" and others made by wiremold that can be found at a local electrical supply or at big box hardware stores. Here is a link to show you some options. http://www.wiremold.com/www/consumer/index.asp
