Italian Ice Cream? The Inside Story
In recent years, the grand, robust taste of gelato began attracting converts from regular ice cream all over the world. Try some gelato and you can almost be sure that you will never again be satisfied with the nondescript flavor of "normal" ice cream. You will find there are many different ways to enjoy this treat, and we'll give you some suggestions in this article. Your choices are as diverse as making your own Italian ice cream at home or doing a "Gelato Tour" in Bologna, Italy. Whether or not it is about Italian ice cream or double jogging strollers, you need to always aim for quality.
Gelato should only be eaten when it has been freshly prepared in the old manner - using only the best fresh ingredients available. Don't settle for less. This is the way the Italian form of ice cream has been made for centuries, and this tradition continues in many places. If a processed food is used to replace the normally fresh ingredients in authentic gelato - such as artificial flavors or sweeteners - will result in a gelato that is inferior in flavor and consistency. As gelato gets more popular, there's more of a chance you'll find massed produced varieties that can be sold in supermarkets, but which can never be as good as the authentic, fresh kind. That's why if you don't live in an area that has a quality gelateria, or place that serves gelato, you might be better off learning how to make it yourself.
Another Italian frozen dessert is sorbetti. This is similar to the sorbets you can buy in America. They are a fruit based, milk less frozen dessert. Yet they are often put into the same category as gelato, and gelateria that sell gelato will also usually carry sorbetti, so for all practical purposes they are part of the same tradition. You will love these fruit-based frozen desserts if you are fond of fruit. And you will rejoice at the selection of flavors to choose from. Do you like watermelon or plums? Maybe you prefer the Hawaiian fruits of mango, kiwi, and pineapple. Either way, I found a website that listed 17 different fruits used to make their fresh sorbet. Sorbets are very different from the Italian ices that have been sold in America for many years. Everyone enjoys a snow cone or Italian ice when the weather is hot. Which is healthier - ice cream or gelato? Compare the ingredients and you can make this decision for yourself. It's not possible to hypothesize about the calories in a serving of gelato, because it can be made from many different combinations of ingredients. Many people are looking for traditional recipes made from natural ingredients, and gelato definitely fits into this category. Italian ice cream is something you can discover the easiest way by searching out gelaterias or other vendors and experiencing as many variations as you can find. I don’t want to slant today's C&J poll by saying how great I think it is that
we now have so many talented editorial cartoonists regularly posting on Daily
Kos, so I won't. Instead, I'll just pull up our giant beanbag chair and have a
little chat with one of 'em.
Jen Sorensen took her first breath of American Freedom Oxygen a few decades
ago in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. She graduated from the University of
Virginia in 1996 and, two years later, debuted her iconic "current events from
a liberal perspective" comic strip _Slowpoke_. Since then, the strip has
garnared a loyal following and six awards from the Association of Alternative
Newsweeklies.
Jen's work has appeared in the _Village Voice, LA Times, Ms. Magazine, The
Progressive_, NPR.org, altweeklies around the country and here at DKos on
Wednesdays. She's served on the board of the Association of American Editorial
